Description:

  1. Authorized by Special Orders No. 81 and 82 of 27 June 1908
  2. The medal was issued to officers and enlisted personnel of the Navy and Marine Corpswho served in the naval service during the Civil War, between 15 April 1861 and 9 April1865.

Background:

  1. The Medal
    1. Obverse
      A Bronze medal, 1 1/4 inches in diameter, with the batle of the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia's battle at Hampton Roads depicted . 
    2. Reverse
      The medal issued to Navy personnel displays the the words “United States Navy” the Marine Corps version displays "United States Marine Corps". Both versions have an a wing spread eagle perched atop a ship's anchor with chain.  Below the anchor are the words "FOR SERVICE". Across the bottom appears a wreath formed by a branch of oak on the left and a branch of olive on the right with the stems joined at the bottom by a conventional knot.
    3. Ribbon
      The ribbon is 1 3/8 inches wide and equally divided with 11/16 inch Navy Blue #1 67179 and 11/16 inch Gray 67200.
  2. There were approximately 2700 of the Navy version and 180 of the Marine Corps version issued.
