Description:

  1. The medal was authorized by General Orders 40, dated June 1915.
  2. Awarded for military service in Cuba between October 6, 1906 and April 1, 1909.
  3. The medal was awarded to U.S. service personnel who have engaged in duty within the geographical borders of Cuba between the dates of July 18, 1898 and May 20, 1902. 
  4. The medal is commonly given to personnel of the U.S. Army, but was attainable by other branches of service under established circumstances.
  5. The medal acknowledges those service personnel who performed garrison occupation duty in Cuba, after the close of the Spanish-American War.

Background:

  1. The Medal
    1. OBVERSE
      1. The Bronze medallion is 1 3/8 inches in width.
      2. The obverse is the Coat of Arms of the Cuban Republic with wreathand fasces bearing the Cap of Liberty.
      3. Around the circumference are the words “ARMY OF OCCUPATION MILITARY GOVERNMENT OF CUBA” and
      4. Above the Coat of Arms of the Cuban Republic are the dates “1898” and “1902”. 
    2. REVERSE
      1. The reverse consists of, a spread eagle ona trophy consisting of a cannon, six rifles and four standards, an Indian shield, quiver of arrows and three spears, a Cuban machete and Sulu kris.
      2. Below the trophy are the words “FOR SERVICE”.
      3. The whole is surrounded by a circle composed of the words “UNITED STATES ARMY” in the upper half and thirteen stars in the lower half.
    3. RIBBON
      The ribbon is 1 3/8 inches in width. It is composed of the following vertical stripes: 1/16 inch Ultramarine Blue 67118; 3/8 inch Old Glory Red 67156; 1/16 inch Golden Yellow 67104; 3/8 inch Ultramarine Blue; 1/16 inch Golden Yellow; 3/8 inch Old Glory Red; and 1/16 inch Ultramarine Blue.
