Description:

  1. Authorized by Navy Department General Order 77 of 29 December 1921.
  2. The period for which this medal will be issued is from 1 April 1919 to 15 June 1920.
  3. Awarded to U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps Service members who served in Haiti between 1 April 1919 and 15 June 1920, or any part of such period.
  4. Also, to the officers and enlisted men who were attached the vessels mentioned in the following list between the dates shown.
  5. The medal is no longer an active award of the United States Navy or Marine Corps and is considered obsolete.
  6. Modern day military operations in Haiti, such as the 1994 peacekeeping operations, are typically recognized by international military awards such as the NATO Medal.

Background:

  1. The Medal
    1. OBVERSE
      1. Features a body of water with land and a range of mountains on the horizon.
      2. A palm tree appears in the foreground on the wearer's right.
      3. Text reading “HAITIAN CAMPAIGN” appears on the upper portion of the medal.
      4. On the bottom are the years “1919-1920”.
    2. REVERSE
      1. The medal issued to Navy personnel displays the the words “United States Navy”. The Marine Corps version displays "United States Marine Corps". 
      2. Both versions have an a wing spread eagle perched atop a ship's anchor with chain.
      3. Below the anchor are the words "FOR SERVICE".
      4. Across the bottom appears a wreath formed by a branch of oak on the left and a branch of olive on the right with the stems joined at the bottom by a conventional knot.
    3. RIBBON
      The ribbon is 1 3/8” wide composed of 13/32" Navy Blue #2, 7/32" Old Glory Red, 1/16" Navy Blue #2, 7/32" Old Glory Red, 13/32" Navy Blue #2
