Description:

  1. Authorized by Navy Department General Order 76, 29 December 1921
  2. This medal was to commemorate the services performed by the personnel of the Navy and Marine Corps during the operations in Santo Domingo in 1916.
  3. The period for which this medal will be issued is from 5 May 1916 to 4 December 1916.
  4. Awarded to any officer or enlisted man of the Navy or Marine Corps who served in Santo Domingo during the period from 5 May 1916 to 4 December 1916.
  5. Also awarded to any officer or enlisted man of the Navy or Marine Corps who were attached to one the designated vessels between the designated dates.

Background:

  1. The Medal
    1. OBVERSE
      1. The prominent feature is an image of the Ozama fortress in Santo Domingo.
      2. At the top, in an arc, is the inscription “DOMINICAN CAMPAIGN".
      3. At the bottom is the date "1916".
    2. REVERSE
      1. Both versions have an eagle perched on a horizontal ship's anchor.
      2. Arched above the eagle are the words "UNITED STATES NAVY" or "UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS" depending on the  service.
      3. In the middle are the words "FOR SERVICE".
      4. Interwined with the anchor are branches of laurel.
    3. RIBBON
      The ribbon is 1 3/8" wide composed of 7/16" Old Glory Red, 3/16" Navy Blue #2, 1/16" Old Glory Red, 3/16" Navy Blue #2, 7/16" Old Glory Red.
    4. DEVICE(s)
      This was a one ime issue medal and no devices were authorized.
