Description:
- Authorized by Navy Department General Order 76, 29 December 1921
- This medal was to commemorate the services performed by the personnel of the Navy and Marine Corps during the operations in Santo Domingo in 1916.
- The period for which this medal will be issued is from 5 May 1916 to 4 December 1916.
- Awarded to any officer or enlisted man of the Navy or Marine Corps who served in Santo Domingo during the period from 5 May 1916 to 4 December 1916.
- Also awarded to any officer or enlisted man of the Navy or Marine Corps who were attached to one the designated vessels between the designated dates.
Background:
- The Medal
- OBVERSE
- The prominent feature is an image of the Ozama fortress in Santo Domingo.
- At the top, in an arc, is the inscription “DOMINICAN CAMPAIGN".
- At the bottom is the date "1916".
- REVERSE
- Both versions have an eagle perched on a horizontal ship's anchor.
- Arched above the eagle are the words "UNITED STATES NAVY" or "UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS" depending on the service.
- In the middle are the words "FOR SERVICE".
- Interwined with the anchor are branches of laurel.
- RIBBON
The ribbon is 1 3/8" wide composed of 7/16" Old Glory Red, 3/16" Navy Blue #2, 1/16" Old Glory Red, 3/16" Navy Blue #2, 7/16" Old Glory Red. - DEVICE(s)
