Description:
- Authorized by Executive Order 9472 dated August 29, 1944. Amended by Public Law 759, 84th Congress, of 24 July 1956
- There's no medal which accompanies this award; however, many men who did receive the Gallant Ship Citation were also awarded other decorations for their personal heroism which contributed to the over-all award to their ship and shipmates.
- In case any person who is entitled to an award under this order dies before the award can be made to him, the award may be made to such representative of the deceased as the War Shipping Administrator may deem proper.
Background:
- The ribbon measures 1 3/8" wide and is comprised in the pattern of 5/64" light sea gray, 1 7/32" dark sea green, 5/64" light sea gray.
- A silver sea horse device 1/4 inch in height is affixed to the center of the ribbon bar
- Subsequent awards require the number of sea horses to be centered in relation to the over-all ribbon.
