Description:
- Authorized through Section 493, title 14 U.S.C.
- Awarded pursuant to Section 493, title 14 U.S.C. to any person who, while serving in any capacity with the U.S. Coast Guard, distinguishes himself or herself by heroism not involving actual conflict with any enemy.
Background:
- Like its counterparts, this medal recognizes specific non-combat acts of bravery and heroism of a voluntary nature which far exceed normal expectations.
- The acts, must have placed the individual in great personal danger for this medal to apply.
- Regulations require that the degree of risk and danger be equivalent to the standards of the Gold Lifesaving Medal for civilians or military personnel on leave and/or liberty.
