  2. Awarded in the name of the President of the United States to units of the Armed Forces of the United States and cobelligerent nations for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy occurring on, or after, October 16, 1941, for U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps units. The unit must have displayed such gallantry, determination, and esprit de corps in accomplishing its mission under extremely difficult and hazardous conditions to have set it apart and above other units participating in the same campaign. Background:

  1. Blue Star - denoted additional awards when this ribbon was originally issued. This attachment is now OBSOLETE.

The blue star was originally authorized by Executive Order No 9050 from General Orders 1921-1935 paragraph 3.d reads "for each citation in addition to the first for which the insignia is authorized, there shall be added one blue star up to a total of five stars."

However, it was no longer authorized by the revision of the Navy and Marine Corps Awards Manual [Rev. 1953]. A copy of General Order No. 187 of 3 February 1943, contains a change from the THE WHITE HOUSE, February 6, 1942 paragraph c.4 indicates "there shall be added one bronze three-sixteenths inch star".

  2. Bronze Globe - denotes service aboard USS Triton (SSN571) during the 1st submerged cruise around the world for the period July 22, 1958 to August 5, 1958.
  3. Gold "N" - denotes service aboard the USS Nautilus (SSR(N) 586) during the 1st cruise under the polar ice cap for the period February 16, 1960 to May 10, 1960.
