Description:

  1. The Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon was instituted in 1981.
  2. Awarded to officers and enlisted personnel of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Naval Reserve for active duty, Selected Reserve, or any combination of active or Selected Reserve service after August 15, 1974, aboard a Naval Reserve ship or its Reserve unit or an embarked active or Reserve staff, for a cumulative total of 24 months. Specific eligibility requirements are outlined in U.S. Navy regulations.
  3. The ribbon is awarded to members of the US Navy and Marine Corps for 12 months of active duty on deployed vessels operating away from their homeport for extended periods .
  4. Subsequent awards shall be denoted by a 3/16-inch bronze star.

Background:

  1. An individual can only receive one SSDR per 12-month period. Second and subsequent awards will be earned for each additional 12-month period of qualifying service. At no point should an individual receive more awards than the length of their tour or two awards of the SSDR in a 12-month period.
